I love helping people understand Reiki in a way that actually makes sense to them. So let’s explore what’s really happening during a Reiki session, without the mysticism, without the fluff, just a grounded explanation of why it works and why so many people feel the benefits.


The Body Is Built to Heal - Reiki Helps It Do What It Already Knows

Your body has an incredible built-in ability to regulate, repair, and rebalance itself.

But it can only do this when the nervous system feels safe enough to shift out of the stress response (fight/flight) and into the parasympathetic state (rest/digest/heal).


A Reiki session is essentially a structured, intentional way of activating that parasympathetic mode.


You’re lying comfortably. The environment is soothing and free of stimulation, with some gentle music playing in the background. The practitioner uses gentle touch or hands-off placements that signal safety to the brain and body.


From a biological perspective, these cues lower stress hormones, ease tension, and give your system permission to soften. And once you’re in that calmer state, your body naturally begins doing what it is wired to do - restore balance. You don’t have to “believe” in anything for this shift to happen.


The Nervous System Responds to Touch, Warmth, and Attention

We know from decades of research that:

  • slow, steady touch regulates the vagus nerve

  • calm presence decreases cortisol and blood pressure

  • focused attention creates measurable changes in brainwave activity

So What Actually Happens in a Reiki Session?

When someone receives Reiki at The Way Home To You, the experience looks like this:


They lie fully clothed on a comfortable table. I guide them into stillness with a grounding meditation, breath-work or gentle sound. Using my pendulum and hands I will scan the body for differences in the energy field or chakras which need extra attention. I use light, intentional touch or hands-off placements over key points of the body, spending a while in each area.

Their nervous system settles, their mind quiets, and their body begins to shift into deeper rest. I may incorporate the use of tuning forks to focus additional energy in an area prior to, during or after reiki. Most clients leave feeling deeply relaxed, emotionally clearer, and more balanced than when they arrived.


You could describe it as meditation with help.

Or nervous system regulation through mindful touch.

Or simply a reset for body and mind.


However you name it, the outcome is the same: your system gets a chance to breathe, repair, and come home to itself.


You Don’t Have to Be “Spiritual” to Benefit

Reiki doesn’t require a particular belief system.

You don’t need to visualize energy or understand chakras.

Your body does the work automatically, because calming the nervous system is a universal human experience.


People who naturally lean toward logic or science often end up enjoying Reiki the most - they feel the results in their own body, and that becomes the only “proof” they need.
